If your drive is locked, third party applications will not see the drive until the password is entered. When using these applications be sure to point your backup to the actual external drive and not the Virtual CD (VCD). Western Digital does not keep a list of compatible backup software and would not be able to confirm compatibility with any specific third party backup software.

Please contact the manufacturer of the software you would like to use prior to purchase to ensure it is compatible with your model drive. Your WD drive should work with most third-party backup applications.

Both Windows and Mac OSX allow you to move files to and from the drive without any special software installed.

Screenshot On the left: What I am supposed to see, per their user manual. Did I buy the wrong kind or is there a better option? The thing went off for hours doing something, and while it eventually came back with all the info backed up, the SmartWare CDs disappeared. For some reason, the icon disapeared for the passport so I unpluged the usb and then reconnected. I have an iMac with a WD My Passport connected through Time Machine. Basically, I want to drop my iphoto library into it and forget it. I can't drag n drop files into the EHD either.

Even after I install what they offer, no back up app is seen. When I attempt to install their software, the back up app is not listed as one of the downloads (See picture). I already use a different WD My Passport with Time Machine to back up my laptop and have had no issues, so that's why I went with another WD.
